about me

My name is Felix Hornicek and as an Interim Manager and Business Consultant, I create value for your company. Group CFO, Global Finance Director, Finance Manager, FP&A Manager, Finance Trainee are all titles I have held. However, what really defines me according to my peers and colleagues are attributes like resilient, goal oriented, flexible, international, authentic, experienced, empathic and fair, methodical but not academic. However, many will claim to embody these attributes. So how will you know if you can trust this claim:

Let’s take the attribute resilient as an example. If you have ever managed through a Carve-Out you know that a Carve-Out constitutes a crisis situation for the company, its employees, and the management team. I was fortunate enough to not only manage through one but two Carve-Outs. One as the party sold and one as the selling party. To successfully complete both transactions, takes next to a great team a certain amount of resilience and crisis management ability.

In every change management process the approach chosen is the key to success. A change of the current state, small or large, is often perceived by employees and managers as a threat, almost always an additional burden. To ensure a successful implementation a structured action plan with precise timelines and deliverables is required.

Flexibility is undoubtedly one of the most important attributes for every leader. To enjoy adapting to constantly changing parameters is key to driving value in four unique corporations in eleven different positions in five different countries and three different corporate cultures (EU, US, JP) like I have done. To be able to analyze the complex working of a company through conversations with the management team and the employees in a short time frame is a challenge that motivates me.

Creating added value through process improvements has been my personal goal in each of my assignments. Added value can come in a variety of ways. For example, the introduction of HFM and Blackline and the corresponding analysis tools has led to better corporate management and the avoidance of process risks through transparency. The segmentation of customized processes in the front-office vs. the centralization of standardized process in Best Cost Shared Service Centers has led to cost reductions while simultaneously increasing employee satisfaction. To drive improvements takes experience, with experience comes authenticity.

Open, authentic communication is particularly important in the initial phase. It creates trust. Another success factor for creating trust is the ability to provide proof points from one’s own experience and on to listen carefully to the process owners and integrate their expertise to ensure a successful implementation on the other hand.

An analysis is only an academic work if it’s not followed up by a methodical, targeted, measurable, and phased plan. In every of my positions, I have used the impartiality of the beginning to capture processes that seem non-intuitive and to understand the “why” behind these anomalies. From experience I have learned that many counterintuitive processes have their justification because of the specific requirements but many also don’t. These need to be filtered out and methodically reengineered together with the team to create added value.

my APPROACH

I create value! This is the goal I defined for myself early in my career, and this is the promise to my customers. What sets this promise apart is that value creation can be measures. There is a current state, a target state and bridging the gap is my Value-Add. In every project, the relevant KPI’s are different and need to be precisely defined at the beginning. Once the relevant KPI’s have been fixed, I start implementing my QuickStart Module. The module consists of several simple tools that I have developed during of my career, which allow me to gain an in-depth overview of the company and organizational structure in a short period of time.

My Aftercare Promise is easily explained. Nothing is more harmful to sustainability than an associate that is abruptly no longer available, even if the hand over was done well. As my core value proposition is sustainable value-add, it is important for me to be available to my clients even after the project has finished. This can be on an hourly- or daily-basis. Every client will understand if a previous assignment requires a couple of hours or an extra day of attention, as they will benefit from it after their project has finished as well. Interim Managers are experienced and proven specialists and executives. Through their many years of experience in various positions and corporate cultures, Interim Managers have developed a good understanding of varying complex situation and environments. Added value can only be measured in the long term, but unfortunately many of my Interim Manager and Business Consultanting colleagues often do not agree. Too often processes are set up and then die over time. To avoid this and to create sustainable long-term added value, it is my promise to my clients that I will continue to be available for consulting after the project has been completed. This can be on an hourly basis to solve a small problem or a multi-day engagement to revamp a process or answer questions that a successor has. Even if the next project is surely already in progress, every sustainable minded customer understands that their flexibility towards the previous customer will also benefit them in the aftermath.
